Get to know the truth about the Scriptures. A roadmap to New Testament Christianity.

Agape love: God's theory of love.

Text: John 15:12-13.
"This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as i have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his love for his friend.
I can sense the power, passion, love of this portion of the scripture. The Scriptures as we know are inspired by GOD, now lets imagine how John must have felt when he received this message, i believe he felt the true Agape love that moment. Agape to me is God's principle of love, verse 13 of our text says "Greater love hath no man than this". Believe or not no greater love than than this of Agape. Before we delve deep into this topic lets find out for ourselves what Agape love really is about.

Agape love: God's theory of love

What is Agape love?

According to Wikipedia; Agape is a Greco-Christian term referring to love, "the highest form of love, charity" and "the love of God for man and man for God. Wow!, this love i tell you of knows no bound, knows no pain nor anger. This is the exact type of love Christ has for the Church and humanity as a whole. This is not to be confused for 'philia love'- brotherly love, as this has so many qualities 'philia' doesn't have. Let's see what the Bible has to say about Agape love: Ephesians 5:1-2
"... Be ye followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us and hath given himself for us an sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.
The above text reveals Agape love as sacrificial love. One being able to lay down ones life for another just as Christ has done for us-His children. Another example is: matthew 22:39
"... And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
This is key in this theory of Agape because as christians we are advised to put others first before ourselves.

CHARACTERISTICS OF AGAPE.

  • It does not boast.

Agape love does not boast i.e when one has this love in them, they become humble for without humility there is no love. pride brings about hate, disgust and so on. God in is love became man, lived among men, was hated by men (his own creation), even to the point of crucifixion. He lived the perfect example, he was humble.
Rom 5:8 says "...but God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners christ died for us."

  • It is kind, tolerant and patient.

Romans 2:1-4
verse 4 reads "...Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?"
His kindness leads us towards repentance. oh, what matchless love(Agape), in all our filth he looks at us and still feels love. This tells us to forgive those who have wronged us and also try our best to show love to our enemies.
Envy naturally invoke a hatred towards others of which paul writes the above text concerning our pre-conversion experience.

  • It does not envy.

People tend to be driven by envy.
Titus 3:3 reads "...we lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another..."
This was our former state of existence as Christ. we hated, we envied, we told lies, all this are against God's theory of Agape. we should yield forth good fruits as God's people.
2cor 5:15 reads "... he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again..."

  • Love of the Truth:

This is our last point for this post, there are hundreds of points out there on this topic, you can always look them up on the internet or you continue to www.wordsmadeflesh.com. Agape love is never diplomatic with the truth because it is always ready to correct with love. we earlier cited humility as a very important characteristic of Agape love, truth also is just as important as humility. Deceit brings about strife. Agape love dwells in truth of God's love.
1John 3:18 reads "...lets us not love(simply) with words or tongue but with actions and in truth..."
we have come to the end of this post for Agape love: Gods theory of love.
